Replacing a Pull Chain on a Ceiling Fan

If you have a three speed ceiling fan with a light kit, you probably use the pull chains more-so than the switch on the wall. This seems to be the most convenient method of turning your fan off and on, however, after a while either the little chain will break or the switch will give out. You don't have to call an electrician and pay a service charge of .00 to 0.00 to have this repaired especially when the replacement switch should cost less than .00.

If you can use a screw driver and stand on a kitchen stool, you can make the repairs yourself. Start by turning off the electrical power to the fan which is normally located at a wall switch. Your fan may be "wired direct", in which case you will have to turn off the power at a breaker or fuse box.

Most fans have a light kit, remove the light globe or glass cover then look for the set screws that hold the light kit to the ceiling fan base. Most have three that are in slotted holes so all you have to do is loosen the screws and gently turn the base and it will drop down exposing all of the wires.

The light kit housing will have an assembly including a brass finial to pass the chain through. There will be a black, white, and green wire; disconnect or cut loose the wires from the fan. Take it to your local home improvement store and match it up with the same type. The new kit will include all of the wing nuts, screws, and electrical tape if needed.

Normally there are protective wire nuts over the wires when you disconnect the switch, if not then you will have to cut the wires and strip back the insulation 1/4 inch to twist on to the new switch wires, cap them attaching the new switch. I always like to wrap the protective caps once with electrical tape in order to keep the cap securely tightened.

Carefully pack all of the wires back into the light kit housing and reattach to the bottom of the fan. Replace the globe and you are finished.

When you turn on the electrical power, your fan and lights should work. By some rare chance if they don't, then the only other problem it could be at this point is a faulty switch.
